What Is Prebiotic Fiber?

A properly useful explainer on one of the more misunderstood terms in nutrition.

Fibre, Prebiotics and the SodaTide Distinction

The two terms get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.

Dietary fibre is any carbohydrate that resists digestion in the small intestine. That is a broad category and includes material that passes through largely untouched, such as cellulose, which adds bulk without being fermented much.

A prebiotic is narrower and has a formal definition: a substrate that is selectively used by host microorganisms to confer a health benefit. Two conditions there matter. It must be selectively used — feeding beneficial organisms rather than everything indiscriminately — and it must confer a demonstrated benefit.

So all prebiotics are fibre, but most fibre is not prebiotic. Inulin, the ingredient in SodaTide, is one of the most firmly established examples.

The Main Types of Prebiotic Fibre Relevant to SodaTide

Inulin and fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are fructose chains found in chicory, jerusalem artichoke, onion, garlic, leek, asparagus and wheat. The most studied prebiotics there are.

Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) occur in legumes and in human milk, where they play an important role in establishing an infant's gut bacteria.

Resistant starch, found in cooked-and-cooled potato and rice, green bananas, and pulses.

Beta-glucans from oats and barley, which have their own well-evidenced effects on cholesterol.

Pectin from apples and citrus.

A varied plant-based diet supplies several of these simultaneously, which is likely part of why dietary pattern outperforms isolated supplementation in most research.

How Much Prebiotic Fibre You Need Beyond SodaTide

The specifics here are what make this article worth reading, and what put products like SodaTide in context.

Total fibre: general recommendations sit around 25–30 g a day for adults. Average intake in most Western countries is roughly half that.

Prebiotic-specific intakes in research: inulin studies generally use 5–20 g a day, and the authorised European bowel-function claim for chicory inulin requires 12 g. Resistant starch trials commonly use 15–30 g.

Some food figures worth knowing: a medium onion contains well over a gram of inulin-type fructans; jerusalem artichokes contain several grams per serving; a cooked-and-cooled medium potato provides a few grams of resistant starch; a slightly green banana several more.

The practical implication is that any supplement delivering prebiotic fibre in milligrams is contributing a rounding error against these numbers. Capsules cannot hold gram quantities — which is precisely why serious prebiotic products come as powders.

How to read the research described on this SodaTide page

The studies referred to here examined individual ingredients on their own, at the intakes the researchers chose — which for inulin and resistant starch means gram quantities, many times what a capsule holds.

That research explains why an ingredient is interesting. It does not show that SodaTide reproduces those results, and no clinical trial of this finished product has been published.

Increasing Prebiotic Fibre Without SodaTide

Cheaper and considerably more effective than any capsule, though less convenient.

Go gradually. The most common reason people abandon a higher-fibre diet is the gas and bloating that follows increasing it too fast. Your bacterial population adapts over a few weeks if you give it time.

Cook and cool your starches. Making potatoes, rice or pasta the day before and eating them cold meaningfully raises their resistant starch content. This is free.

Add alliums and pulses. Onion, garlic and leek are inulin-rich and go into almost anything. Lentils and beans deliver both fibre and protein.

Choose slightly green bananas for resistant starch; the content falls as they ripen.

Vary the plants. Different fibres feed different organisms, and diversity of intake is associated with diversity of the microbiome.

Drink enough water. Fibre without adequate fluid is uncomfortable.
